Sights to see in New Hampshire (Lakes Region or around Portsmouth)?
My friend and I are visiting NH for a week in July. We'll be staying at a resort on Lake Winapasaukee (sorry, if I spelled it wrong). What are some things we just have to see while we're there? We're already planning on whale watching, visiting Boston/Cambridge and lots of shopping. What else do you suggest?
Depending on how outdoorsy you'd like to get, there are a number of hikes that are rewarding in the area. AMC has a number of guides for the area, and the one I have for White Mountain hikes seems very helpful.
Mount Major is an easy (or moderate) hike on the southern tip of Lake Winnipesaukee near Alton Bay. It's easy to find, a 1000 foot verticle gain, and offers splendid views. It's windy at the top, and you should be sure to bring water.
Arethusa Falls is in the White Mountain National Forest, off route 302, and is a very spectacular 170 foot waterfall. It's about a 1.5 mile hike, and reportedly gains 800 vertical feet, although it felt like less.
Diana's Baths is a series of waterfalls near North Conway. An easy hike, with lots of opportunities for relaxing with the cascades and pools.
North Conway also has some outlet shopping, so it might be a good half-and-half day.
You might also considering Freeport, Maine for shopping -- home of LL Bean. It is a bit of a drive from NH, but no further than Boston.
Oh, and don't worry about spelling Lake Winnipesaukee. Honestly, all we do here in NH is start with a W and keep adding letters until we get tired.
