What If Your Car Computer System Is Remotely Car Hacked?
While it may sound like science fiction to some, being car hacked might just be one of the first high-tech crimes to hit the expressway, reports Discover Magazine. With some knowledge of a modern vehicle's computer system, a wireless Internet connection and the right software, hackers just might be able to take control of a vehicle's functions from afar. That could include lights, braking, acceleration and possibly even steering, although the latter would likely be somewhat more difficult. Needless to say, the mayhem of such car hacking could create dangerous situations.

Consider the nightmare of being car hacked
Here's how the car hacked scenario might go down.
Let's say you're stuck on a gridlocked expressway in your brand new smart car that was purchased with a honey of an auto loan. Just up on the nearby ridge sits a hacker with all the ill will and Wi-Fi he needs to stare you down. The hacker scopes your vehicle's computer system, sends the command and forces your car to accelerate into the rear bumper of a metallic gold BMW a few feet in front of you. It's quite another matter when compared with the mere mechanics of sticky gas pedal, and Stefan Savage claims this will become an increasingly common occurrence. A modern vehicle's electronic control unit (ECU) controls many different functions throughout a car. According to BBC News, approximately 100 megabytes of code are spread across those ECUs. Discovery Magazine indicates that this is more than enough digital Real Estate for hackers to play with.
Savage has his own CarShark
Savage's CarShark software demonstrated just how easy it can be to remotely gain access to car functions. Whether it's acceleration, braking, wheel position or even parallel parking, the Electronic Stability and Active Cruise Control systems are key points in a car's electronic network. A hacker sending fake data into these systems could effectively take control of a car and cause a great deal of mischief or destruction, says Savage. It isn't a simple process that any dime-store hack could accomplish, but a sophisticated hacker could. Hackers will always look for new ways to cause mischief if they are sufficiently motivated, but it is clear that automakers must take action to secure car computer systems. car hacked single-owner vehicles are one thing, but hackers could go on to more sophisticated public transport options like "road trains" and cause hellacious damage.
Car hacking isn't all death and destruction
Stefan Savage's work is focusing on thwarting the darker sign of car hacking, but there are somewhat less dangerous ways that the exploit is used. A Wired blog points to an Austin, Texas car dealer who used car hacking to shake up delinquent customers. Firing the horns and lights were the dealer's little way of making dead beats take notice. One employee crossed over the safety barrier by disabling 100 of those dead beat customers' cars, however. This goes to show that automakers would probably be wise to lock down their vehicles' computer systems to outside tampering.
