Why The New Astra VXR Could Give The RS A Scare
Any car manufacturer worth their metal has a motorsport division, whether its Renaultsport with their track-focused street weapons, Citroens new-to-the-fold DS range or even independent tuning firms like AMG these machines combine practicality with feisty handling and rock-solid road-holding. Every era has it's very own lusted-after hot hatch that defines the industry, the 80's had the 205GTi, the nineties the Escort Cosworth and the noughties best offering was arguably the arguably the Ford Focus RS, available on car leasing deals this is still the daddy but it is facing a number of challengers to its crown.
Vauxhall have never been strangers to hot hatches, the Carlton with its Lotus underpinnings was a big hit and the Astra Gsi was a true exec-mobile that was morphed into a snarling road devouring beast. Vauxhall, owned by parent company GMT introduced its very own motorsport badge, VXR, back in 2006, models such as the Astra and Corsa have sold well but were widely criticized by motoring journalists for their lack of focus and poise compared to rivals, Vauxhall are fighting back however.
The recently released new shape Astra has received rave reviews for its excellent value and smooth, sleek stylish body shape. The 3 door GTC version has recently been debuted at the Paris motorshow but more exciting, this eludes to new VXR version. With this new model, Vauxhall plans to go head to head with Ford, dropping a 300bhp+ unit into the front-wheel drive platform. The Astra will have to go some way to compete against the RS which is widely regarded among the motoring press as a fantastic car with it's agile handling facilitated by a limited slip diff and Cosworth powerplant that packs more torque than an Audi Q7 or a Porsche Cayenne both 4x4 cars that navigate steep hills with ease due to their insane levels of low down power
