No Ford Pickups Could Be Smaller Than The F 150 After Next Year
Ford sells more full-sized pickups than any other company. Ford has been for a really long time. For a long time, the F150 has been the most popular full-sized pickup. Ford has made other models that sold well. The Ranger was popular in its day, however the model is being retired. Also retiring is the only other truck made by Ford, the Sport Trac. All brands and autos under the Ford banner are being done away with, and soon only the F series will stay.
Sport Trac closing down
As of October 2010, there won't be one more Sport Trac made by Ford, as outlined by the Courier-Journal. Ford is shutting down the line, as it is just not selling. The Sport Trac has a cult following, but not enough to justify continued manufacture. Initially offered in 2000, sales held steady for several years at around 60,000, however afterward steadily declined afterward. This hasn't been a good year for it either. Fewer than 6,000 are sold so far. Trucks smaller than full size are down as a total market segment, making up only two percent of sales for the entire auto industry. It will cost Ford more to keep making Sport Trac and Ranger models, than to emphasize the F150.
Ford cleaning up
Ford, just like General Motors, is trimming away the fat. The car maker is getting rid of models and brands that aren't selling. Ford will offer less than 30 different models worldwide, according to Automotive News. Ford offered up to 97 as lately as 2006. Since then, Jaguar, Volvo, Aston Martin and Land Rover were sold. Mercury will stop existing at the end of the year.
Move it or lose it
Why keep making vehicles that do not sell? Ford isn't really. The business is also retooling many of its automobiles so that more parts are standard. Take the Fiesta, which has 10 variations offered worldwide. About 65 percent of the parts of that vehicle are shared with other automobiles. Ford believes the turbo V6 in the new F150 will appeal to more people.
