eBay Trial Selling New Cars To Increase General Motors' Sales
General Motors, the owners of big car brands like Chevrolet and Pontiac, earlier this year filed for bankruptcy. However, they have now been able to turn things around and have stopped receiving protection from bankruptcy.
Now they have managed to pull themselves up, they are now building the company back up again and trying to being in some extra sales. The company are looking into a series of new methods to sell their vehicles. The first method is car leasing, which they has already tried back in 2008 but pulled out of the same time last year. The company now has plans to return once more to the contract hire market sometime in the next month. Because the deals would be coming directly from GM, they could offer very cheap van leasing offers because they can take the cars straight from the production line, being able to undercut much of their competition.
The second method that's being trialled is a deal with the American online auction website eBay. As of August 11th, within the California area, General Motors started listing brand new Buick, Chevrolet, GMC and Pontic cars onto the online auction site.
The system is being run on a trial basis up until the beginning of September, however, currently over 225 of the 250 Californian dealers for General Motors are signed up for the scheme. Customers using the system will be allowed to either pay the listed price for the car, or they are allowed to haggle for a new price. After the car has been purchased, the buyer must travel to one of the registered General Motor dealers to get their new car.
If eBay and General Motors find the system to work well, they will consider spanning it across the US. Also if it does prove successful for GM, I wonder whether we will see other companies offer their own cars for lease such as a Mazda lease.
