Cellular Payment Network To Be Installed In Salt Lake City
Three of the major wireless service providers are working to develop a wireless transaction system in Salt Lake City, Utah. The system will be released in Salt Lake in 2012, and people can use wireless technology to transfer funds to merchants through the cellular transaction system, called Isis.
Another step for cellular phone credit card technology
The wireless transaction system started a few months ago with near field communication (NFC) technology. It was put onto iPhones. The iPhone has a computer chip in it that the reader system picks up. Merchants charge whatever bank account or charge card the chip has attached to it. One merely needs to wave their iPhone with the NFC chip, and a deduction is made from the right account. When it comes to financial technology, this is huge. Because so several phones have internet access, people can already use a smartphone to do banking transfers, balance their checkbook or get online unsecured loans.
Wireless transaction system to be released in Salt Lake
The Near Field Communication system could be started in one place. NPR states this place to be Salt Lake City. Individuals can start paying for the public transportation system with Near Field Communication phone readers. They will be put in the whole system. Three major wireless carriers -- AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon Wireless -- are forming a partnership venture with the city using Isis, the NFC system that those carriers are using. The carriers will need phones other than the iPhone that are NFC equipped. BusinessWeek pointed out that Sprint is doing its own work. It is creating its own technology.
Tech not widespread enough
Near Field Communication technology is not spread enough to be put everywhere as Isis would hope. The ad campaign states the technology will make Salt Lake the "place where you can leave your wallet at home.". However, smartphones are beginning to become far cheaper to buy and payment technology is moving toward cellular systems.
