Book Your Corfu Hotels And Take In Some History On Your Holidays
If you just look a bit deeper, you will find there is much more to most holiday destinations than sun and sand. Whether you're in Crete, Malta or Corfu hotels, you can expect than just beaches and pretty sea-side restaurants and shops. But if you delve a bit further into the history and culture of a place, you will discover a rich history waiting to be told.
Whether you’re staying in Corfu, Crete or Malta, you will find places just like these that will give you an insight into the background of these holiday hotspots. Here are some of the best:
Corfu, Church of Saint Spiridion
This is the main church in Corfu and is packed full of rare religious icons and relics. You will notice how beautifully this centuries old church has been kept by the locals and how much pride is kept in maintaining it. The ceilings are decorated with stunning Venetian wall-paintings. There is a room in the back where there the relic of St Spiridion remains. The relic is covered in precious ore to preserve it and has constant protection.
You will need to remember that you can't take photographs here, and that women must cover their shoulders and wear conservative clothing. It is one of the Island's most popular attractions too, meaning there are always Corfu hotels not far from there.
Crete, Spinalonga
Spinalonga Island is an ancient fortress built to protect ancient Olous, once one of the most important towns on Crete. Spinalonga was one of the most powerful fortresses on Crete before most of it was destroyed just after 1030. In 1574, a new fortress was constructed, but parts of the original wooden model can be found in the Venetian museum.
An interesting fact is that Spinalonga is not its original name. The Venetian's renamed the area though when they took rule of the are. They adapted the original name of Stin Elounda as they didn’t understand the Greek Language, so Elounda was translated to Spina (thorn) Longa (long). It is located in a popular tourist area of town, meaning it is an easy place to get to from your Crete hotels.
Malta, Casa Rocca Piccola
Located amongst many Malta hotels is this popular tourist hotspot. Casa Rocca Piccola was originally built in the late 16th Century for Don Pietro La Rocca, a Knight of Malta. On his death it was left to the Italian Langue of The Knights, but for the last 200 years some of Malta’s most important families have occupied the building.
The house has 50 rooms, including passages slowly cut out over its 400 year history. The guided tour takes in all of these sites, including one particular tunnel that was used during World War II to shelter over 100 people from the heavy German bombing. The family areas give an insight into how the privileged in Malta once lived.
