How to Protect Yourself from Real Life Magnetos
When you consider people controlling electricty, there are a couple of things that would come to mind. The first would be science fiction and the second would be Magneto from X-Men and his purple helmet. However, stuff like this is starting to come into the real world. Debbie Wolf lives near Brighton on the south coast of England and she is one of the ever growing 'SLIders'. An SLIder is a person who believes that they have the ability to interefere with electical appliances, anything from fridges to panel heaters.
The ability that has made Debbie famous all over the world is called Street Light Interference syndrome (SLI). In Japan she has been compared to comic book heroines and even characters from the BBC show 'Heroes'. Considering that Debbie believes she has SLI, her choice of profession is a little risky. She works within the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton, fortunately nothing has yet gone wrong.
Although it's an interesting idea to think that someone like this exists, it does need to be questioned. Does SLI exist or is it simply coincidences that lead people to believe they have a power. As with most questionable things, there is one possible explanation.
One aspect of maintaining a good room climate is the moisture within the air. The majority of homes these days have double glazed windows and central heating. This combination as well as heaters and oil filled radiators often leads to the air inside homes getting very dry. Having dry air at home can cause lots of health problems, however, dry air can also increase the levels of static electricity within your home.
A home could be compared to that of a computer data centre. At large data centres an incredible amount of heat is created, this causes the air to get very dry which causes an increase in static electricity. This static can cause terrible damage to the computers. To combat this, humidifiers are used to increase the humidity and reducing the static electricity. This can be the same in your home, having a normal level of humidity in your home would help to maintain a low amount of static electricity. So really what Debbie needs is a humidifier. The reason why she doesn't damage all the equipment at the Hospital is most likely due to them already have humidifiers within the hospital to ensure equipment like industrial heaters aren't damaged by the static.
