Oils That Are Non-Detergent
Tracking the growth of technology have been all types of vehicle oils.
In years past, most common type of oil used was non detergent oil . Now the usual is the detergent variety.
Multi-weights are which? In this day and age the correct choice will desoot our engines, and suspend in oil the soot. As particles that are too small to get trapped in the oil filter. Until you change your oil, soot too small to be trapped stays in it.
Today's passenger vehicle motors don't require non detergent oil. Lawnmower engines and such use this type. The containers that the product is in has two numbers on it. This is what's called the viscosity modifier. The number coming first means cold oil viscosity. After which comes a W as seen, weight isn't the meaning.
The last number means viscosity when the oil is running at engine temperature. The thicker the oil the higher the number on the container. You need to take consideration of climates before choosing. The warmer the climate, the bigger will be the top number. Relocating to a colder climate requires you to drop that number down from 10 to a 5 for reasons of safety. If you are using a thicker oil you can interfere with your oil flow and oil pressure.
Keep in mind that the reason that most products are now thinner rather than thicker for cars bearing clearance while in use. The distinguishing mark for the non on the package is SA or SB. Aircraft oil also uses this for the air cools. The API SA isn't for use in engines that are gasoline powered and built after 1963. Trying to use this in modern engines will result in bad performance and equipment damage. API SB; does not have any additives.
Also, automotive engines that are gasoline powered and built before 1930: don't use. The attempt to use these non-detergent motor oils in your engines can cause great damage to your engines.
