Southwest Airlines Keeps Planes From Flying After Gap Tore In Plane
A recent incident has brought on Southwest Airlines to start grounding aircrafts. Southwest is noted for having more affordable fares than other airlines, but is grounding planes to conduct inspections. A gap opened up in the fuselage of an airplane in mid flight, and problems have been found with the plane that were not so effortlessly caught however nevertheless posed a risk. The airline is inspecting its fleet, as security is paramount. Post resource - Southwest Airlines grounding flights after hole rips in plane by Newsytype.com.
Many inspections at Southwest of aircrafts
A five by one foot hole was ripped in a Southwest Airlines airplane on Flight 812 near the cockpit on Friday, April 1, reports USA Today. This was a flight going from Phoenix to Sacramento. The flight was able to make an emergency landing at a military base near Yuma, Ariz., and fortunately no passengers or crews were harmed. Normal wear and tear on the aircraft caused the aluminum “skin” of the plane to tear. Stress fractures occurred first. Reuters reports Southwest saying that it is very rare for the skin of the plane to open up like this while, in March 2010, the plane was inspected, the National Transportation Security Board confirmed.
Aircrafts grounded for a while
Monday, April 4, 100 airplanes were anticipated to be grounded while there were already 600 that were grounded by Southwest the couple of days after the incident. In order to make sure there were no cracks like this, the airline started looking at all aircrafts that were like this model. There are 171 Boeing 737-300 planes that Southwest owns like the one in the incident. There are Boeing 737 variants being inspected by Southwest. The 737, according to Bloomberg, is the world's best selling airliner of all time. More takeoffs and landings are required for Southwest planes because of the short airplanes which could be more stressful on a plane. It is really hard for an inspector to discover the cracks that brought on the Flight 812 gap. This is because they're only about a quarter of an inch long.
Traveling will cost more now
Once a year, planes have an in depth inspection while being regularly inspected. Aircraft expiration dates are being considered by the Federal Aviation Administration though. It will cost a lot to replace a $30 million aircraft after all the stress of take-offs and landings. Regular airplane purchase could really hurt airlines. It might become even more expensive to buy airplane tickets.
