The Remarkable Development Of Downsizing Of Engines In Automotive Technology.
The Amazing Advances in Automobile Technology—Down-Sizing of Engines.
{Overview:}
Reduced engine size coupled to more power is an remarkable development in motor car technology and is being showcased here in this fourth article in the series. This will put engines under the spotlight and how they are being down-sized without losing power.
How any further engineering developments could happen beyond what was reached already, was generally doubted in the previous decade. The concern of a possible scarcity of fuel in coming years together with stricter legislation on exhaust gases on motor cars, spurred engineers on to develop much more efficient cars.
Two possibilities exist on how to retain the power or even increasing it while downsizing an engine.
* Let it operate at higher revolutions. The usual means by which a racing angine produced more power than a normal production engine was by letting it turn higher revs and breathe better There are limits to this as an engine becomes rough running and no longer usable on the street if too much performance is demanded from it.
- Push in more air by various means such as supercharging, which has the same outcome as increasing the engine size. Currently the tendency is to use turbo-charging to increase power.
{How it is being done:}
{Turbo-charging and Supercharging}
There is probably no easier way of increasing the power of an engine than to force in more air than it can suck in by itself.
There are two ways a) supercharging and b) turbo-charging.
a) Pumping in excess air into an engine through a supercharger (of which there are several types around) is one way of doing things. It is similar to increasing the size of an engine, which is in itself one of the easiest ways of attaining more power.
A less efficient method to increase power is to make an engine bigger and this was done in earlier years by American manufacturers. The power to drive the supercharger comes from the engine itself and that means a percentage of the power is sacrificed to drive the supercharger.
Mercedes standardized on a single engine size on many models of its C-range simply by varying the supercharger speeds to give different outputs, but these days they seem to have gone for turbo-charging. With a properly designed turbo-charging system the same result can be obtained from a single engine size.
b) When exhaust gases leave the cylinder there is still a lot of energy left in them that can be used to drive a turbine. By connecting this turbine to another on the same shaft, it blows fresh air into the cylinder, pressurizing it and utilizing modern contols, can produce astonishing results.
It is quite common now to have modern turbo engines that develop their maximum torque at just twice their idle speeds and keep this up to quite high revs. Who would have thought that in less than a decade the power output of production engines, that are only two thirds the size, could be the same or even much more. High torque (pulling power) at low revs used to be the character of larger engines of bygone years but these turbo-charged engines have those same attributes but deliver much higher mileage.
This is efficiency! The fuel mileage has increased likewise. Without these advanced electronic controls this would have been unthinkable.
The amazing improvement in efficiency can be attributed to this development. European manufacturers have really accepted this technology. Turbo-charging is not a new technology and has been around for many years. Chevrolet used turbo-charging on some of their Corvair models as far back as the 1960's
Without the very accurate control of all the functions of an engine, especially the combustion process, the advance in engine technology would not have been possible.
What effect transmissions have on the efficiency of an automobile, will be the theme of another article in the series.
