Caution - Motor Enthusiasts
If you're anything much like me, a scratch here and there on your automobile really isn't too much to worry about. The bumper ding (probably not your fault) is nothing to lose sleep over. However if you're anything like my Dad, a scratch of any size, in any location, is considered a grave matter which should be attended to quickly. Not too long back I was unfortunate enough to learn all about the wonders of crash repairs and car restoration services, when one of my Dad's cherished vintage cars landed in the repair shop.
After finally retiring, Pop had pulled out all the stops to become an automobile restorer. From 20's buggies to a '67 Mustang, a massive range of classic cars became the height of his existence. It was on a clear, crisp Sunday morning, the perfect day for driving in the country side. The only bad thing about Sundays is, naturally, Sunday drivers. We'd gotten out of the garage and one or two streets from home when Dad's Chevrolet Bel-Air was T-boned by a very apologetic mother of 6.
Still getting over whiplash in the passenger seat, my heart was warmed as I watched my pop flip through the directory to call a flat top before investigating if I was ok. My neck still twinging, I enjoyed an awkwardly silent excursion squashed between my sobbing father and a sweaty tow truck driver. To further my delight, we spent a full 40 minutes driving around the closest town until Dad picked a mechanical restoration shop which was "fully certified in handling such a precious machine".
After some months of work involving determined auto restoration manufacturers, metal crafters and a long line of technicians and panel beaters, my Pop was a long way from satisfied. His chevy went through scratch repair, several painting services, body restoration, rim repairs, trim restoration and last but not least all over detailing (not that a skilled detailer came close to Dad's standards).
That ill-fated event didn't stop my Dad fixing up cars or taking them out, it was just a speed hump on his path to auto heaven. When I think about Dad's (regularly creepy) love of vehicles and tireless devotion to perfection, I often wonder how I - a person who wouldn't consider automobile painting or scratch repair unless I won the lotto -could possibly share genes with him.
