The other name with which wheel trims are known is the hubcap which act as decorative disks covering the center of the wheel or at times even the entire wheel. Many car manufacturers use the wheel trims to showcase their company symbol for people to identify the make of the car just by looking at the wheel trims which have more of a decorative value than a functional value.
The first wheel trims were functional and were known as dust or grease caps and were fitted by threads onto the center hub. Most of the cars now have the wheel trim with the snap on design center cap, these were first introduced around 1932 for the wire wheels. 1935 wheel trims were small and only covered the hubs center, but 1935 was also known for the introduction of trims covering the full wheel as well as barring the outer lip. Many times the manufacturer's trade logo is there on the wheel trims and for high-end luxury cars for instant recognition, the wheel trims and radiator grills at the front bear the signature of the car. Radiator grills and wheel trim styles remain unchanged even when the car model does. Certain types of vehicles use wheel trims that don't rotate where the logo or words etched on the base of them will always be standing. The sign RR distinctively seen on the wheel trims of Rolls Royce, a luxury car proudly announces the lineage of the car. Upright wheel trims have also been used for advertising in racing cars, taxis, commercial vehicles etc.
