Blaze A Trail To Oregon
In distinction to the Southeastern United States, which is geographically ancient, the Pacific Northwest is very new country, with rugged mountain ranges and active volcanoes as well as thousands of square miles of evergreen forests. It is also one of the most beautiful parts of the U.S. Oregon's Willamette Valley, which stretches north to south from the Columbia River to Ashland, was one of the first areas of this region to be settled by Euro-Americans, starting in the 1820s. By 1859, Oregon had been approved statehood and Portland was already a most important port city.
Oregon is home to the oldest city in the region, Astoria, which was founded as a fur trading post by John Jacob Astor in 1811. Just a a small number of miles south of Astoria is Fort Clatsop, a recently reconstructed reproduction of the fort built by the Lewis and Clark expedition in 1805. While not a native of Oregon, the Shoshone Indian Sacajawea played an vital function in the exploration of the state. Her role in guiding Lewis and Clark on their historic journey west is honored with a bronze in Portland’s Washington Park.
Portland, once known as "Stumptown," is as good a place as any to embark on your Oregon vacation. The city is home to numerous historic hotels such as the Heathman, the Governor and the Benson. If you are touring the Pacific shoreline, fantastic Oregon beach rentals can be found all the length of the coast. Communities such as Seaside, Bay City and others have delightful vacation rentals for short or long term rental. Portland also has a world class public transportation system thus getting around downtown Portland is uncomplicated.
While in Portland, bibliophiles should not pass up the chance to visit Powell's City of Books on Burnside. While you are in the neighborhood, think about taking in a program at the nearby Artists' Repertory Theater, which presents major works right through the year. Sports fans will be delighted to learn that PGE Park, home of the Portland Beavers, is also within easy walking distance of downtown just off I-405. Tickets to ballgames are a serious bargain, starting at as little as $11. When you are in the mood for a romantic amble with your significant other, be certain to take in the International Rose Test Garden in Washington Park and you will start to appreciate why "Stumptown" is also known as the "Rose City."
Oregon is a stunning state with plenty of great outdoor activities such as backpacking, boating, camping, fishing and golfing. Along with all of these great outdoor activities, Oregon vacation rentals are located all throughout the state displaying their rich history and hospitality. The folks at these great institutions are continuously delighted to suggest the best bistros and tours.
