Affordable Triggers For The Remington 700
Countless gun racks will boast a seldom used, but much loved Remington 700. You don't want to loan out your latest and best so it's good to have a knock about 700 you can loan out or use as a back-up if your precious new rifle or its scope fails during hunting season. Some 700s have seen literally dozens of hunting seasons and are still giving great service. These are often great rifles, let down by heavy triggers built to protect you from lawyers rather than kill deer. We know a good trigger will boost accuracy, but in these cash-strapped times there are often other priorities. We want the best value for money. A new trigger can be the cheapest, easiest way to increase the accuracy of your treasured Remington 700 hunting rifle. I'd like to show you some low to mid range options that will give light, crisp, utterly predictable trigger pulls.
The least expensive unit on the market is, in some ways one of the best. The Jard Remington 700 trigger kit includes a few replacement components that will shift the balance point of your trigger's sear engagement to an accurately calculated point to reduce its pull weight. Polished, hardened steel mating surfaces ensure a clean crisp break. A big advantage of this unit, which uses the existing factory sear engagement and overtravel adjustments, safety and housing, is its lack of complexity. Ultra reliability in damp and very cold conditions is all but guaranteed by the small number of properly treated steel components. 7 and 14 oz. pulls are ideal for varminting whilst 28 oz. is a good, dafe pull weight for deer hunting and other dynamic shooting pursuits. Despite the lack of pull weight adjustment this unit gives a very crisp consistent pull. It can be used on rifles of either hand.
The next most expensive trigger is the Shilen Remington 700 Standard trigger. This is a match grade unit which will also fit the 40X rifle and XP100 pistol. This unit is adjustable for weight of pull, sear engagement and overtravel. The trigger blade is smooth and narrow. The Shilen Remington 700 boasts a crisp, light break adjustable from 1½ to 3 lb. The adjusters are locked against the fiercest recoil by hex nuts. The mating surfaces are polished to ensure the smoothness of pull. This unit is a 'drop in' fitting, secured by two pins. The factory safety is re-used in older rifles. Additional components are needed if the trigger is to work with a Mark X pro trigger. You can have a blued or stainless unit to match your rifle's finish. A much lighter pull Competition unit is available which is suitable for bench rest and varminting and can be fitted to either handed rifle.
The Rifle Basix Remington 700 trigger employs an aluminium housing with heat treated and polished steel internals. Weight of pull, length of pull and let-off are adjustable and the unit comes in four different weight ranges for both pre 2006 and 2006 and later rifles. The pre 2006 unit which only fits units not fitted with Mark X pro triggers, reuses the existing factory bolt stop and safety whereas the 2006 and later unit comes with a bolt release and safety. This unit has a much wider, serrated trigger for those who prefer one. Only right handed rifles can be fitted with this trigger.
