Trade Laws And Regulations Broken By Boeing, Says WTO Judges
New airliners are no longer being expected to expand fleets as the global recession has harmed airline travel a lot. Large government subsidies are accepted by aircraft manufacturers that are attempting to boost the net income in any way possible. Reuters reports that World Trade Organization (WTO) judges ruled Boeing, the storied American airline manufacturer, received government subsidies that given the manufacturer an unfair competitive edge on European competitor Airbus. The $20 billion in subsidies is being challenged by the European Union, according to sources.
WTO pointing toward Boeing and Airbus
The WTO judge's ruling against Boeing is at the moment confidential and will not be officially released until mid-2011. It has been released to some of course. United States and European officials were able to determine it. Boeing and Airbus have already appealed case findings of course. The World Trade Organization ruling showed that since relations in transatlantic aerospace travel is really bad right now, there may still be a settlement negotiated between Boeing and Airbus, says Reuters. The EU gave a cash advance as a government subsidy to Airbus in June 2010.
Research contracts, tax breaks and sour grapes
It is like we are playing with kids. One kid seems upset that an additional kid is attempting to do what he got in trouble for a couple of days ago. According to European sources, Boeing took $17 billion in research contracts from National Aeronautics and Space Administration and the Pentagon, and loved $4 billion in tax breaks from the corporation's home state of Washington. The World Trade Organization said that Boeing broke intercontinental trade laws. Even though it is not technically prohibited to get government aid, taking the contracts and tax breaks was wrong. There is a claim that Airbus was glad about the contention. Boeing said Airbus got a stern glance in there. Thus, Boeing felt their actions in accepting government subsidies were acceptable.
Calls for President Obama's involvement
Reuters got EU trade spokesman John Clancy's opinion. He said "negotiations at the highest political level" may be the only thing that will keep Boeing and Airbus from fighting. United States officials think the EU is subsidizing the production of the Airbus A350 which is what the WTO decided could not happen and until that stops, the United States of America will not come to the table. In a statement to the press, Boeing maintained its position that they have done nothing to distort the transatlantic aerospace market while continuing to point fingers at EU practices with Airbus.
