Dubai Airport Delay Don't Dent Outlook
The progressive Middle East has a face: the glittering skyline of Dubai. Long associated with oil, its economy is now driven by a western-friendly outlook. This new Dubai is fueled instead by tourism, free trade and business, all helped by a high profile construction industry that has given the city a distinct skyline. Tourists are attracted by a combination of this rich modern architecture, historical cultural buildings and a plethora of shopping malls stocking luxury items at competitive prices. With these elements in combination, Dubai holidays were the 8th most popular destination in 2007. Dubai is hoping to attract 15 million tourists daily by 2015 and in order to cope with the ever increasing demand placed upon it, it has been expanding its airports.
The new Maktoum Terminal at Dubai International Airport was due to be opened in March 2011, but the date has slipped by 'a matter of months'. The Government plans a programme of investment into the already state of the art airport, with an eventual capacity peak of 160 million travellers in the decades to come. Dubai's aviation goals aren't merely about getting tourists into their own city, as important as tourism is to the local economy. It is also an important gateway to the Middle East and much of South Asia. European tourists heading out on Maldives holidays pass through Dubai, a lucrative opportunity that the city is increasingly interested in exploiting. Those simply passing through the airport will find extensive duty free shops aimed at their custom, whilst packages are being forged with specific stop-over periods. The city is very welcoming of foreigners, though there are a few widely publicised public order laws that it is possible to fall afoul of (the city is not unjustifiably keen to emphasise that foreigners should observe local Islamic customs, such as clothing restriction and Ramadan fasting).
Dubai is committed to making itself not merely a metropolitan shopping centre. The recent Maldives wedding scandal may have put you off the idea, but you can go halfway there for an extremely memorable Weddings abroad. The sand of the desert and the sand of the beaches may merge into one in the collective consciousness, but Dubai has some brilliant beaches and perpetual sun, whether you're honeymooning or simply looking for a fantastic holiday destination.
