Getting Good Holiday Home Insurance
For many British citizens, buying a holiday home abroad has been a major dream and for many, one that has come true as scores of UK citizens purchase holiday homes abroad. Regardless of whether you've bought, or are looking to buy a holiday home overseas, good holiday home insurance is vital in protecting your investment.
So what difficulties are there facing Brits looking for decent holiday home insurance? Perhaps the biggest natural barrier is the language; it can be very tough trying to discuss a complicated insurance package when you don't speak the language and this will put a lot of people off. Then there are the differences in law; European property law can vary wildly from place to place and can make it extremely difficult to negotiate your policy. Add in the general (and in some cases considerable) differences in culture (Spanish siestas are a good example), and you can begin to see how difficult this process can be.
As a result, suprising numbers of UK citizens don't end up getting second home insurance policies at all, preferring instead to save the hassle and take the risk. However this really shouldn't be the case, decent insurance for holiday homes is an extremely important element in properly protecting your investment. Without a good policy you'll find yourself hugely out of pocket in the event of a loss, accident or break in.
So we can understand the why getting overseas property insurance is extremely pertinent, but how should you go about it? Should you utilise a UK based agent or a foreign agent to take out your policy? Many holiday home buyers from the UK would use a foreign agent, thinking this would be the best course of action - I would actually advise the opposite. Taking out your policy with an overseas broker will more than likely work out cheaper, but you're still going to have to address the language, law and cultural differences already mentioned. These difficulties may well result in your not fully understanding your insurance policy, which could result in real difficulties if you need to make a claim. You're far better off in general going with a UK agent; they'll be able to fully explain your policy to you, provide all prices in pounds sterling and generally work to prevent any nasty shocks in the future. You'll also always be put through to English speaking customer service reps, should you ever need to claim on the policy; making the entire experience drastically less stressful.
