BACK TO SCHOOL - BE PREPARED!

Whether you have a teenager or a pre-schooler, going back to school can be a difficult time as your children accept with sadness that the summer is over, and anticipate with excitement the prospect of seeing old friends and possibly making new ones.

Going back to school involves a substantial adjustment as the days of later bedtimes and sleep-ins are left behind and the need to be well rested, more alert and better organized arises. The following tips cover most aspects of what is involved when commencing a new school year, from first day jitters to homework and from backpack safety to being well organized – they should make your family’s re-entry into school life, just a little less painful!

COPING WITH THE FIRST DAY

• The first day of school is as exhilarating as it is stressful. Tell your youngester well in advance that he or she will soon be going to school. Prepare the night before by planning meals, clothes and transportation.

• On the day, remind your child that he is not the only pupil who is feeling a bit shaky at the prospect of starting school and highlight the positive aspects of this such as playtime, old and new friends etc.

• If your child normally takes the bus, and if you feel it is appropriate, drive your child to school and pick him up on the first day.

BACK TO BACKPACKS

• Choose a backpack with wide, padded shoulder straps and a padded back.

• The backpack should never weigh more than 10 to 20 percent of the student's body weight.

• Always use both shoulder straps. Slinging a backpack over one shoulder can strain muscles. Wearing a backpack on just the one shoulder may also increase curvature of the spine.

• If the school allows, consider a rolling backpack; however, remember that rolling backpacks still must be carried up stairs.

• If your child’s school provides lockers, make sure your son or daughter uses it to store most of the heavy books and that he or she only brings home what they will need to complete the homework.

TRAVELLING

School Bus In the USA, approximately 26 children died last year and over 9,000 were injured in incidents involving school buses. More often than not, these deaths and injuries did not happen in a crash, but as the pupils were entering and exiting the bus. Please remember these safety tips and go over them with your children:

• Have a safe place to wait for your bus, away from traffic and the street.

• Wait for the bus to stop before approaching it from the kerb.

• Always check to see that no other traffic is coming before crossing.

• Make sure to remain in clear view of the bus driver.

• Do not move around on the bus. If the bus has seatbelts, wear one. Car

• All passengers should wear a seat belt and/or an age- and size-appropriate car safety seat or booster seat. Car safety belts are the best form of protection passengers have in the event of a crash. They can lower your risk of injury by 45%.

• All children under 13 years of age should ride in the rear seat of vehicles.

• If you plan to car pool, ensure that you do so with a parent whose safety standards plus driving and timekeeping skills are acceptable to you.

DIET

Unfortunately, many lunchboxes are overloaded with fat, sugar and salt and are missing fruit, vegetables and whole grains. Maybe you could make a point of packing healthier lunches this year. If time is an issue in the morning, prepare lunchboxes the night before and store in the refrigerator.

• Most schools send cafeteria menus home on a regular basis. With this advance information, you can plan on packing lunch on the days when the main course is one your child prefers not to eat or that you feel is not healthful.

• Try to get your child's school to stock healthy options such as fresh fruit, low-fat dairy products, water and 100 percent fruit juice in their canteen and vending machines.

• Each can of soft drink contains around 10 teaspoons of sugar and 150 calories. Drinking just one can a day increases a child's risk of obesity by 60%.

HOMEWORK AND STUDY HABITS

Homework helps your child do better in school when assignments are meaningful, well completed and are returned with helpful comments from the teacher. A homework assignment should have a specific purpose, come with clear instructions, be well matched to a student's abilities and designed to help develop a student's knowledge and skills.

Children need to know and be shown that their parents and the adults close to them think homework is important. If they know their parents care, children have a good reason to complete assignments and return them on time. There is a lot that you can do to show that you value education and homework.

• Create an environment that is tranquil and conducive to doing homework. Youngsters need a permanent and dedicated workspace in their bedroom or another part of the home that offers privacy.

• Keep basic supplies like paper, pencils, pens, markers, rulers, etc. in the homework area.

• Set aside ample time for homework and make it a rule that the TV stays off during homework time.

• If your child is motivated by rewards – choose something age-appropriate for him to work towards – on completion of an assignment or a particular task you might want to dangle a ‘carrot’ such as a pizza for a teenager or a simple coloring page for a younger child. At sites like Pokemon Coloring Pages you’ll find the best Pokemon coloring sheets.

• Be available to answer questions and offer assistance, but never do a child's homework for him/her.

• If your child is struggling with a particular subject, and you are not able to help her yourself, a tutor can be a good solution; however, you should talk it over with your child's teacher first.

Questions to ask your child:

• What is today's homework/assignment? • Is the task clear? Do you understand what you have to do? If not, suggest calling a classmate. • When is the work due? Should we make a chart to help you stay on track?

AFTER SCHOOL ACTIVITIES

When choosing an after school activity for your child, consider:

• Your child’s interests

• Your inclinations

• The time you have available

• The family budget

When checking out the venue and teacher (or coach) of an after school activity, make sure you have answers to the following questions:

• What is the goal of these classes – fun, mastery, competition?

• Look at the environment – is it safe?

• Speak with the staff – ask politely if they are qualified? Experienced? Caring? Stimulating?

Soon enough bed times will be established, morning routines will be set and homework schedules created – and before we all know it, the summer of 2007 will be upon us.
