Kyusu Teapots - Japanese Ceramics
Tea is a beverage enjoyed worldwide. The Japanese have the preparation and consumption of tea down to a work of art. One part of this artwork is a Kyusu teapot. This is a Japanese ceramic tea pot that has a unique handle extending from one side. As opposed to the traditional curved handle atop or on the side of most other teapots. This teapot was designed to brew green tea, exclusively.
What sizes do Kyusu teapots come in?
The Kyusu teapot comes in various sizes. You can find them in small individual teapots, enough for a single cup of tea. Or, if you are so inclined they are available in a size large enough to serve over 12 cups of tea. All of these have beautiful coloring and design. You can use them for service or sit them on a shelf for an exotic addition to your décor.
Green tea’s best friend
Kyusu is Japanese for “teapot”. This teapot is made from clay or ceramics. The Kyusu teapot was designed specifically to brew green tea because metal and green tea brewing do not mix well. Green tea tends to draw out the metallic flavor from the pot it is brewed in. An alternative had to be designed to avoid this event. The Japanese developed the Kyusu teapot because they drink a lot of green tea. Although, many of the customs in Japan have Chinese origins, the Japanese drink green tea more so than the Chinese who are more prone to drink black tea.
The origins of the Kyusu teapot
Located in the Aichi prefecture of Japan, Tokoname is the birth place of the Kyusu teapot. The original color of the Kyusu teapot is orange-red in color. This comes from the clay that is found in Tokoname. Tokoname is also known as one of the “Six Old Kilns of Japan”. There are not actually “six” kilns. What this refers to is the city itself. Considered the major centers of stoneware production, they were given this moniker.
A unique design
The Kyusu teapot is different in that it does not require an infuser to be used with the teapot. An infuser traps the loose tea in a cage like environment, and keeps the tea leaves from drifting into your cup of tea. Few societies have deemed drinking tea and spitting out the leaves as good etiquette. The Kyusu teapot is designed with a fine mesh strainer in the spout so that the tea leaves are trapped in the teapot itself, instead of flowing up to and through the spout. The tea is poured out through a simple twist of the wrist. This proper pouring technique also keeps the tea leaves from floating up and out of the spout.
The rinse and go teapot
Relatively easy to care for the Kyusu teapot is a great addition to your tea drinking paraphernalia. Simply rinse the Kyusu teapot with clear water. No soap or special detergents to clean or maintain a Kyusu teapot. Once the teapot is washed you are ready to use it again. What could be easier?
Kyusu teapots are available at specialty shops and online. No longer strictly orange-red in color they come in many different colors and designs. Affordable and requiring very low maintenance how could you not want one?
