San Francisco Dentist Is Thumbsucking Bad For Your Child's Teeth?
One of the most common habits that children struggle with is thumbsucking, and they can often fall asleep sucking their fingers or thumbs. This is a common habit that many children use for comfort so that they can drift off to sleep right away. Many children give up the habit of thumbsucking when they are between 2 to 4 years of age, which is the time that their baby teeth will fall out and the permanent teeth will start to grow in. This is the opportunity to help your child give up the habit of thumbsucking before their permanent teeth grow in, or else they could face crooked and disaligned teeth as a result.
Here’s a recommended resource:

Let’s take a look at some valuable guidelines.
Much of the damage that could happen to your child's teeth and mouth will depend upon how intensely they normally suck their thumb. If your child is a more aggressive thumbsucker, he or she is definitely more at risk for long-term damage and crookedness to their teeth. Although it may be difficult, it is important to try to break the thumbsucking habit right away. To begin with, it is important to start rewarding your child for being good when he or she is not sucking their thumb. This is much better than scolding them for sucking their thumb since they will be rewarded for good behavior. You can also try to comfort your child if they normally turn to thumbsucking because of anxiety. Try to get the bottom of the issue as to why your child wants to suck his or her thumb.

You can also enlist the help of your child by asking them to help you stop their habit. Some of the popular methods that many parents use are putting socks on the child's hands at night so that they won't suck their thumb, or they may even loosely tape their fingers together so that they can't suck them at night. This is something that you can decide with your child so that you can break the habit together as positive reinforcement. As a last resort, you may also want to talk to your dentist to ask for their support to encourage your child to stop sucking their thumb. With these methods, you should be able to easily encourage your child to stop thumbsucking for good, which will prevent disalignment in the mouth and reduce the need for braces as they grow older.
It is important to try to kick the thumbsucking habit at the time when your child's permanent teeth are growing in. If your child does not stop the thumbsucking habit, they may have to have braces when they get older, which is a long-term and expensive treatment to fix crooked teeth. Many parents have no idea that long-term thumbsucking can cause such crookedness in the teeth, which is why it is essential to work with your child to stop this habit as quickly as possible to protect the appearance of their smile!
