Wikileaks Documents Paint A Grim Picture Of The Afghanistan War
92,000 classified documents with sensitive info on the Afghanistan war were leaked by Wikileaks, the news site created by Julian Assange. The Times, the Guardian, and Der Spiegel were the 3 newspapers around the world that received these documents from Wikileaks. July 25 was when reports were given by the newspapers on the info received. The Wikileaks documents provide new insight on how the Taliban insurgency is gaining strength, civilians are being killed in the crossfire, and Pakistan intelligence operatives are accepting American cash in one hand and aiding and abetting the Taliban to kill American soldiers with the other.
Newspapers receive Wikileaks documents
Wikileaks documents were had information in them that is used to create war strategy by desk officers and troops within the field. Before publishing stories that used info in the documents the New York Times and the Guardian wrote commentary saying they had taken care not to publish details that would harm national security interests. But U.S. National Security Adviser Gen. James Jones disagreed, saying:
"The United States strongly condemns the disclosure of classified info by individuals and organizations which could put the lives of Americans and our partners at risk, and threaten our national security."
Taliban strengthens with Pakistan help?
Al Qaeda, according to Wikileaks documents published by the times, have help from Pakistani intelligence in planning some of their attacks. Despite the fact that it is nearly extremely hard to link the Pakistani operatives with Al Qaeda, the reports show Pakistanis being unwilling to stop those who attacked near Pakistani borders, moved across the frontier in trucks, and went into Pakistan for safety.
Afghanistan was worse than told
In a series of articles, the Times, the Guardian and Der Spiegel articles paint a picture of the Afghanistan war that is much worse than the spin put out by the U.S. government. Progress has stopped in the war because the Pakistani army is helping the Taliban, the government and police force in Afghanistan are corrupt, and the Afghanistan army hasn't been loyal. Many individuals already knew this was a problem but let the Wikileaks documents confirm that. But the Wikileaks documents bare the truth about the Afghanistan war as Congress and the public are increasingly disillusioned about America's deepening involvement.
Wikileaks suspected of espionage
Wikileaks was criticized by the hacker who turned in Private Bradley Manning, who's the soldier who allegedly handed the documents to Wikileaks. ABC News reports that Adrian Lamo said he ratted on Manning to keep the reports from becoming public. Because of the amount of info that was actually released, Lamo suspects Manning had others involved with him. Lamo thinks that Manning was hired along with others by Julian Assange as "a personal shopper for classified data."
