BP Oil Leak Has Chance Of Being Stopped For Hurricanes Come In By Static Kill
Monday was when the "static kill" was supposed to start for BP's Macondo well. The static kill, delayed a week by tropical storm Bonnie, is the first step toward plugging the leaking well for good on day 100 of the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico 2010. The static kill will put a bunch of mud within the well before the "bottom kill". These kills should be what end the worst oil spill that has ever happened in the U.S. before.
Oil spill cap helps static kill
BP put a temporary oil spill cap on so they could move on with ending this problem. On Memorial Day Weekend, reports the New York Times, an attempt close to the static kill happened but failed. The "top kill" didn't work as the mud wasn't as strong as the oil pressure being released from the well. Since the flow has stopped with the oil spill cap, the static kill shouldn't have that exact same problem.
Bottom kill will happen after Static kill
The original preventer that was designed to stop the Gulf of Mexico oil spill from happening could have mud pumped into it. The New Orleans Times Picayune reports that right now on standby are 12,000 barrels of mud. Stronger mud could be used for the bottom will that has about 37,000 barrels waiting to be pumped in. As mud is being pumped, BP crews will observe pressure inside the well. A "static condition" within the well is what we're looking for with the pressure. After the static kill is complete, crews will drill the final 100 feet of the relief well to intercept the Macondo well.
Finishing before a hurricane hits
By the end of August, the kills have to be finished. The Associated Press reports that BP has numerous reasons to attempt the complicated static kill even though the relief well is almost complete. The static kill should make it easier to finish the relief well. BP wants this finished and also the relief well might not work as planned. The process also needs to be complete with the threat of storms in the way. BP needs to finish before long because Federal officials pointed out there are one of the most hurricanes between mid-August and late October.
