Holidays To Gran Canaria Are Great For Water Sport Lovers
Gran Canaria, located in the Atlantic Ocean and part of the Canary Islands, is a much loved get away for holidaymakers. Its moderate climate and clear waters make holidays to Gran Canaria a great destination for sun and water-based fun. Temperatures, for much of the year, flutter around 23 degrees Celsius and there is almost 60 km of sandy beaches. While many visitors spend their days poolside, water sport aficionados can indulge in a bevy of activities on Gran Canaria holidays.
Sailing
The sailing season is primarily from April to October. Most of the activity centres on Las Palmas, which annually launches the Atlantic Rally for Cruisers, and cities on the south coast, including Pasito Blanco, Puerto Rico, Puerto de Mogán and Arguineguin. Novice sailors have a good selection of schooling and equipment hire options in this area.
Windsurfing
Gran Canaria seems to have been created with windsurfing in mind and the sport can be practiced along its entire coast. The best conditions can be found at Playa de las Canteras in Las Palmas and at Galdar on the north coast. Its recommended that beginners use the more protected waters near Puerto Rico and Puerto de Mogan, whilst the more proficient may want to do battle with the 60 mph winds that blow off Pozo Isquierdo and Playa de Vargas.
Diving and Snorkelling
Exploring the ocean on holidays to Gran Canaria is a popular activity. If you want to learn to scuba dive, then many of the hotels offer certified diving schools. These also take diving trips and hire out equipment. A visit to the marine reserve at El Cabron, which forms a natural aquarium, is a must, as is Pasito Blanco with its two shipwrecks.
Deep Sea Fishing
A great range of big fish frequent the waters of Gran Canaria, such as swordfish, shark and marlin. There is a history of deep sea fishing in Gran Canaria and it boasts over 50 world records. Through the months of May to September, a number of companies arrange fishing trips from the harbours of Pasito Blanco, Puerto de Mogan and Puerto Rico.
