It might take 10 years or 30 years, but in the end, there is no question that your lungs will become severely affected. There is no advantage to smoking.
Reports have indicated that over 400,000 people die every year in the United States because of illnesses caused by the smoke of cigarettes. People who smoke regularly make up 90% of recorded deaths from Lung Cancer. Other forms of cancer such as cancer of the larynx, oral cavity, bladder, pancreas and kidney are also linked to a life style of smoking.
There are some other side effects that develop even more quickly. For instance, smokers quickly develop stains on their fingers and teeth. The presence of nicotine in the blood has been shown to cause a constriction of arteries, this causes a lowering of the body temperature. The body is also put through a mild attack of Carbon Mono oxide poisoning every time smoking is done.
Sadly, the risk of smoking is not only limited to smokers. It is also known to affect non smokers as well. Statistics from the United Environmental Protection agency, have indicated that that secondary smoking (the inhalation of smoke by people next to smoker) is responsible for about 35,000 deaths each year. Second hand smoking has been found to be responsible for conditions such as bronchitis and asthma attacks.
The advantages of quitting smoking are obvious; the risks of diseases is greatly reduced. Even more advantages that can be found with quitting smoking are less expenses, cheaper health insurance premiums and ultimately improved social standing.
Unfortunately, quitting smoking is known to be difficult because of the addictive effects of Nicotine. Still, there are many methods that have been put in place to aid along the process.
Some of the tools used by intended quitters are Nicotine patches and Nicotine gums. This provides some semblance of nicotine provision, without the harmful effects of smoke. These substitutes can be dropped as the dependence wears off.

People who are trying to quit smoking are often advised to seek help with social groups. The group is further strengthened by the presence of people who have successfully quit smoking. The benefit of having gone through the quitting process is greatly beneficial. The mission to quit smoking is further strengthened by avoiding people who are still habitual smokers.
