Why Do Beatles Vinyl Albums Hold More Value Than Blind Lemon Jefferson’s?
Music at one time was jam-packed with what are now considered legends, not like today’s music. Is it because everything has been done? Has the music business tried all ideas? Or is it just because the music market is over-produced and all about money?
It seemed that corporate America was losing its grip on the music industry in the nineties and that real artists were back on the rise. Lo and behold, the bubblegum machine was able to override this awesome wave and push the true artists out of the picture once again.
This issue, however, has been occurring since radio was created. Talent used to be a small component of what was needed for one to be played on the radio; the colour of a person’s skin was a big part of the equation. Back in the late 1920’s, blues players like Blind Lemon Jefferson and Leadbelly were the best in their expertise of music. Their love songs, blues, dance tunes and kids’ folk songs were something most anyone could relate and dance to.
The sound of blues slowly turned into that of rock. With the evolution of the new sound, many good artists were left on the side of the road broke due to corporate record motives. Elvis Presley was one of the only artists to make it out of this time who had a real talent. Being from the south, Elvis understood where the blues came from and he always stood true to its roots. Even on early Elvis Presley vinyl recordings, you can’t mistake the sound and influence that the great bluesmen had on this young man.
Rock-n-roll became a hit eventually in the UK. England was not a country that was known for the blues, nor did they have much in the way of that southern Elvis-like sound of rock music. England, in spite of this, gave a start to the Beatles. Ever since the Beatles vinyl records came to America, the sound of music was forever altered.
There have been countless musicians who have tried to repeat the sounds of the Beatles and Elvis, but true legends are hard to come by. There are always those few who cite other artists such as the Stones or Jerry Lee Lewis as being better than Elvis or the Beatles, but sales of vinyl records have shown otherwise.
It seems that Elvis Presley vinyl records and Beatles vinyl records will always be among the favorites of record collectors. It is a sad loss that the bluesmen of rock like Blind Lemon Jefferson will never get the same acclaim and acknowledgment.
