The Home Of NASCAR’s Annual All-Star Race
On May 21st, Concord, NC will welcome NASCAR at the Charlotte Motor Speedway for the Sprint Cup Series All-Star Race XXVII. The race has been run here every year since its origination in 1985, excluding 1986, when the race took place at the Atlanta Motor Speedway.
Until 2007, when Sprint took over the race, regarding it the Sprint All-Star Race, it had been called multiple names; originally called The Winston until 2004, and then being renamed the NEXTEL All-Star Challenge. The race distances a sum of 100 laps, equaling 150 miles all-together, split up into four segments. The first segment covers 50 laps, half the duration of the race, and is proceeded by two segments of 20 laps each and a final segment of 10 laps to complete the race.
Grandstands border much of the track, which is a mile and a half around. There is also a vast area inside the track for campers with RVs, as is customary with most NASCAR events. There are accommodations for a capacity for 140,000 individuals, including the stadium bleachers and luxury boxes.
In 1961, shortly proceeding the Charlotte Motor Speedway opened in 1960, in an unforeseen turn of events, the owners filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on account of deficient ticket sales proceeding spending $1.25 million on construction, but quickly recovered. In 1992, after a 1,200-fixture permanent lighting system was installed, and it became the first modern site to host night racing. In 1998, the naming rights were picked up by Lowe’s and the venue was renamed the Lowe’s Motor Speedway, before the speedway’s name was changed back to that of the former in 2009 when Lowe’s chose not to renew their deal.
Three fans were slain in the grandstands when the tire was ejected into the stands at an Indy car race, a car lost a tire in the midst of an accident in 1999. Eight other fans were injured and it was determined that they speedway would no longer welcome Indy car races for safety concerns proceeding only two years in Charlotte.
The victors of past series’, past All-Star victors, and racers from the 2010 and 2011 seasons who have accumulated enough points to qualify will be welcomed in the greatly awaited approaching Sprint All-Star Race. The day following the race, on May 22nd, the Charlotte Motor Speedway will also hold the formal induction of the 2011 class of the NASCAR Hall of Fame, which currently consists of the likes of Bobby Allison, Ned Jarrett, Bud Moore, David Pearson, and Lee Petty.
