Stock Photos That Serll - 10 Essential Ingredients
Stock photos are utilised for numerous different purposes nowadays, so it isn't difficult to imagine that anything can sell, but realistically photos that sell are generally going to meet some reasonably standard rules. Obviously there'll be exceptions, but more often than not the top selling stock photographs will usually share some of the following traits...
1. Most feature a strong, easy to identify subject. Stock photographs are always 'of something ' and it's sometimes immediately recognisable. Empty landscape images or cluttered scenes don't often sell, and anything where the viewer has to work hard to identify the key subject is not very likely to interest many photo users.
2. A powerful foreground subject. The primary subject is usually going to be positioned right up in the foreground and there'll be minimal clutter or diversions in the remainder of the image.
3. Backgrounds are usually uncluttered and complimentary. They add to the message without distracting from the key point of interest. There'll be no powerful design elements interfering with the key message. Washed out skies are simply not an option.
4. {People} will be included. When {people} are usually used they are logically involved in the situation and there is a believable reason for them being there. Over-posed models have little use, and if a model is patently posing for the camera, then the story will be told by carefully selected props or powerful facial expressions and/or body language.
5. {People} are typically captured so their faces are visible and unobscured. If the face is visible, more often than not, the eyes will be a key focus. Where people are included, they are used to convey emotions and ideas, so imprecise expressions or obscured faces have very little interest to most stock buyers.
6. Symbols & props will be included. Quite often there'll be carefully chosen selected items that add to the message the photograph conveys. These will be carefully selected and positioned to make their inclusion believable and logical.
7. Often a variety of 'props ' will be used to capture a series of similar stock images with very different meanings. The more prolific photographers will do this every chance they get capturing many different story-lines from a single photo op, each carefully developing a new message for a different possible buyer type.
8. There is limited demand for 'empty ' landscapes, seascapes, sunrises and sunsets. These do however make fantastic backgrounds for other more commercial stock subjects. Take these sorts of shots for other purposes if you wish, but then set about finding stronger foreground point of interest that conveys a message that buyers can use.
9. Life, movement, action... All add to the marketability of a shot. A buyer will always choose the action shot over the lifeless portrait... Of anything.
- The child engrossed with a toy will always outsell the same child holding to toy watching the camera.
- The trotting horse will outsell the pony standing feeding in the middle of a paddock.
- The sailboat underway,,, canvas full, leaning into the wind will outsell the shot of the moored boat.
- The lion stalking it's prey will outsell the lion sleeping in the shade.
- A couple enjoying a glass of wine will outsell the still life of the wine bottle and 2 glasses
- ... And so on.
10. People are the key... No matter what field of work interests you most, if you plan to sell stock photos, you have to include people in your images to develop 'mini-storylines ' that photo users can use to help convey their own messages.
Get people into the scene each chance it is possible to get, and when you can't, make sure you look for techniques to get some life or activity into the shot. Yes there's certainly a market for quality still life photography, but often the demand is considerably higher (and the contest considerably less) when you start telling stories.
