i am making a model but cant find any styrofoam large enough (LxWxH), like a rectangle, any suggestions?
im making samus aran's arm cannon and cant seem to find the right type of styrofoam to use and carve. can i have suggestions? or maybe other ways of attacking this project?
I wish I could find one of the several answers I've given that cover this territory, but alas...
Anyway, the type of foam (polystyrene foam) you probably want for a large sculpted project is probably "extruded ps foam" (Styrofoam btw is just one brand name for some kinds of ps foam). The white *expanded* type of ps foam is cuttable, but is much less dense so more crumbly and unsmooth.
At home improvement stores you should find various kinds of sheets of this ps foam used for different kinds of insulation.
If you cut the foam sheet into pieces, you can then stack and adhere those pieces together until you have the size block you need for the model you want to make.
To carve or shape the block, use various things like serrated knives (plain or electric) or very sharp knives, or "hot tools" which actually melt the cuts.
You can then refine the shapes where necessary with files, coarse sandpaper, even the edges of other foam.
