how do i remove sticky fixers from my car nameplate?

i have removed the numbers and some black sticky stuff is left behind. i tried white spirits, but that helped a bit. the car is quite old and i want to replace the name badges.

There's a product called GOOF-OFF that works well. It comes in a small can(and larger sizes). WD-40 also works well.
